It's a big rumor and assumption that Southwest is non-union simply because they make money and their employees seem happy! In fact, they are one of the most unionized airlines around, with quite a bit of their workforce, not just the pilots, unionized! With that, I'd have to say that how the company is run and the people running the company make the difference, not necessarily the unions alone.

It's a combination of the company management and the unions that make a company great. There are plenty of good companies that are non-union as well... but it's usually not airlines.

I'm pretty sure that Google is non-union, and they're one of the best companies to work for.

I think these days that airlines are trying so hard to cut costs to stay competitive that the employees need a union.

I've never worked for a union, so I really know nothing about them.

My husband is a union rep for ALPA at our regional ( along with doing other things for the union). I could make a lot of comments about this topic, but I think I am going to stay out of this one. There are a lot of different feeling about unions, and we could go on forever about how great or how awful they are. But critisizing someone who didn't vote or voted against the union, is not right.

It's really no one's business how someone voted or to tell them that they should have. Trying to preach about how good the union is and how everyone should be all for the union is like those people that say one kind of religion is better than another. You can't say that a union is the best thing for everyone, because everyone is different. I wear a lanyard at work that is from Old Navy and says Old Navy all over it but I never shop there. I honestly don't really like their clothes. Does that mean I shouldn't wear the lanyard?? If someone doesn't vote or votes against the union, that doesn't mean they shouldn't complain when they company treats them unfairly. Everyone has their own opinion and has the right to it. One way of life is not always the best. Sorry, I tried to stay out of it, but maybe I am a little critical of people who think there way is the best.

Thank you!! I completely agree with you, in fact, I was even thinking earlier about the comparison to religion before you even posted that. I really appreciate that you are coming from the perspective of being married to a rep but STILL can maintain your respect to each individual's opinion.

With people making the kind of insulting comments they are toward those that voted against the union, it made me totally compare it to passionate religious people. I am very religious but I try to only offer what info is requested of me, or explain things from my perspective, w/o trying to be all "this is the only way, the right way" or w/o trying to sound preachy or shoving it down people's throats. A lot of the comments I have seen around an a few boards toward the non-voters or those against unions, are coming from people who would completely freak out at you if you tried to convince them that they need your religion. No one wants a union agenda shoved at them anymore than they want a religious one.

No matter how passionate a person is about something, they HAVE to remember that acting superior or "right" is no way to change someone's mind about the issue.

Me, I am the opposite. I am not very religious at all. I go about as far as thinking that everything happens for a reason. And I would never tell someone that their way of thinking is wrong. Some people will always believe that their way is the only way and you will never change them. I thought these forums were for people to speak their mind and not get judged for it. Apparently, I was wrong. Oh well. I could go on forever talking about this, but I would probably be wasting my breath. You can't change someone's way of thinking when they are " passionate " about it, so I don't even bother. I guess I should get a new lanyard, huh??!!
