When my SO used to jumpseat he would wear his uniform through the line and then go and change becuase he wanted to be able to travel comfortable. I don't think it was hiding who he was. He just hates to wear his uniform when he isn't working.

I never knew. Anybody else ever heard of this?
oh yea.. my pilot does that every commuting flight he takes! he'll wear the uniform shirt thru security line (cuz of the whole liquids thing) and then change for comfort or for the beverage if he is able to get in first.

I don't consider keeping the ID hidden bad form....if they're not on duty, why do they have to continually wear the id? they have that right to not have to be "responsible" or answer peoples questions and being a regular pax just like everyone else... whenever you're wearing the id, you always have people coming up and asking you questions that most of the time, you can't answer.

just like when on a 8-10 hr flight, my dh puts a shirt on over his uniform shirt & credentials when he comes out of the cockpit to take a break... for one thing, people think he's just another pax and for another, people would be weirded out if they saw one of the pilots sleeping or taking a break "on the job". but the break is just part of the process and regular pax just don't understand that.

On the uniform note, I read/heard somewhere that some pilots were getting into some trouble by changing in the airport bathrooms! Something about it being a security issue? As far as displaying the badge, Brian always has his displayed.. but then again he almost always commutes in his uniform. He even had it on when we were on our UK & Ireland trip earlier this year. However, both times the FA’s told him to take it off and relax! I don’t think that there is any requirement for it to be on or off, it’s just personal preference. Who knows?

Lance jumpeseats home most of the time, although he sits in the cabin. He is wearing his leather jacket now, and strips it of all the badges. mostly b/c the other pax want to talk or ask questions, or want to complain! He never drinks, b/c we read in our handbook if you jumpseat you are considered part of the crew are are resposible for helping in case of an emergency.

yup, that's true... the jumpseat is like being a crewmember...even if you get moved back to a regular seat.

then they should change the liquid rules or at least recognize an ID when they see one minus the uniform?! haha

I mean the guys have already gone thru federal background checks...they should already be exempt from the liquids rule altogether if you ask me.

Kind of a side note- but DH was traveling with a VERY small sewing needle in a very small mending kit and the TSA took it. Of course he was fine with the TSA taking it but during this process he was laughing so much. The TSA ended up calling the supervisor over because DH was laughing at "them". When the supervisor came over DH explained you are taking my mending kit with a VERY small needle, but I have a flare gun and a pick ax in my flight deck? Makes sense to me!

We always laugh at that image- I mean honestly what the heck could you do with a small needle? Get up real close to a bad guy and poke at their eyes? Ok kind of a gross image, but really a sewing needle?

No kidding! The liquids thing is such a pain in the butt. I tell ya what... it would make so much more sense to me if there was a separate screening area for crew members at ALL airports... they could scan their fingerprints and they could go through. I think it would make for better security anyway, half the time the TSA doesn't check the crewmember's badge too closely if they're wearing a uniform. Ya know?

I tried to find where I read that thing about changing in the bathrooms, but I can't find it. I think it was on the "crackpipe."
