| I also agree with the fact that on our death bed, we do wish we would have worked less. I think we also regret a lot of things we did. |

| American Airlines CEO Don Carty told his 110,000 employees this week that the company spends more than $1 million a day as a result of absenteeism. Pilots can be grounded for several weeks by a common cold. They risk potentially career-ending injuries such as burst ear drums if they fly while sick. FAA regulations prohibit pilots from taking most medications commonly used to treat colds. |

| Jetgirls Ol' School Member | I think the difference between whether you "deserve" or are "owed" sick days or if you see it as stealing and not owed, is the difference of if it's "you get to call in sick so many times before your in trouble" vs. "you get 6 days of Paid Time Off (PTO) per year". If it's PTO, it's yours, and if you haven't used it by the end of the year or the end of your employment, you usually get paid for it in your final check. If it's not PTO but just company policy that "up to 5 sick days a year are ok" meaning more than that and you're in trouble, then I'd say you aren't "owed" those days sick or not. Hope that made sense. |

| Jetgirls Plus Member ![]() | It did! lol. Ours are PDO (paid days off) Every month the company gives the employee 4.something hrs of PDO. You can either cash it in, use it if you are sick, or put it into a sick bank if it isn't used at the end of the yr. We always just cash ours in at the end of the yr, or whenever we need extra cash. Now, when dh does call in sick, he doesn'rt automatically get paid for that trip. It'll show sick and the amt will be adjusted on the pay chk the following month, unless you transfer the monies from the PDO/sick bank. Of course, if after 6 or 8, I think, occurences, then you do get a verbal warning.

| Doesn't the back of pilot medical certificate say something along the lines of the pilot self demeaning himself/herself not well/fit to fly (paraphrasing like crazy)? If so, if pilot flys when he himself doesn't feel well (never mind/without dr opinion) doesn't he invalidate his own medical certificate? Hubby has not used any sick days. We are pretty new to commercial flying, but hubby's many years of work before, he didn't use a lot of sick days. On the other hand, pilot brother in law uses a ton of sick days. (No not sick at all. Doesn't like start time, end time, destination, CAP, FA, hotel, you name the reason.) Brother in law 6 years younger than hubby and somewhat "wild", maybe that has something to do with it |

| well.. I hate to dissapoint you, but no way we have 7-8 week a year of vacation!! oh geeeaaa..I wish we had ![]() I donīt wanna hijack this thread:-) I, personally, work full time and have 22 days off per year ( + 2 days thrown in for national holidays 24 and 31 december, otherwise I have to work half day!!)...thatīs in Spain..in Sweden I had one week more, totally 30 days per year. We donīt have sick days, and you can stay home only if the doctor says so... which sometimes is not so easy to get. If you fail to present the certificate from doc...you might get fired.. Maybe, there are certain categories that have more privilegies than I, e.g. teachers, winter holidays ( week off), summer holidays( 2 months off).. As to pilots...they are under Civil Aviation Authority, and above spanish labour legislation, must comply with CAA directives... my BF must have at least 12 hours between flights, max flight time 5 hours than a break for at least 1 hour...and maximum duty 5 days a week..But Spain is different ![]() This summer my BF broke a record...15 days flying without one single day off... He will eventually get back those days...but as to holidays, same as me...22 days off per year... |

| As oppita says, it's different in Europe. We get a lot more annual leave than you do in the US (about 5-6 weeks) but we don't really have a limit on "sick time", although if you're off sick for more than a few days you usually need a doctor's certificate, although that depends on the company. I second the stuff Regina said about pilots being off for prolonged periods with a cold! It's not good a fly with stuffed nasal tubes! |

| Admin/Owner ![]() | same here...if your off for more than 2 days, you have to have what we call a "doctor's note" validating the need to be off for 3 days or more. I can't imagine having to have a doctor's note every time you have a headache /migraine and need to take off an hour or so to go to the dentist/eye doctor/annual appts (we use that as sick time).... is it really that strict as far as "sick time" goes over in europe?

| DH and I heard about this website on the radio just the other day! Doctors Notes Jury Service Notes Absence Notes Excuse Notes ... I'd never use it, of course, but we got a chuckle out of it! |
