| Does anyone know anything about Emirates Group airline? DH got called for an interview, and this is going to require a ton of discussion before he makes a decision. If anyone can direct me to some reliable information about the company and lifestyle, please let me know. Will it really help him out in the long run with his career? He's been stagnating at AE for so long, and things are not looking good for an upgrade any time in the next few years, and he's looking at just about anything and everything. Obviously him moving to Dubai for a few years, with DD and I staying behind while I go to school would mean huge sacrifices on everyone's part. He's hoping that if he did it, he would qualify to do contract work in the future. I'm desperate for any information or first-hand accounts. Kristie - is there anyone on JC that you might be able to put us in touch with? Thanks so much! |

| There was a girl that I knew on another chat board who's DH got hired by them last year. DH looked into them and he heard some crazy stuff (good crazy). You would live in Dubai (sp?). They give you a place to live and you get a maid for your home. I do know (from this girl) that the place they give you to live is in a gated community of nothing but Emirates employees (not sure if they are all pilots). I would have to ask what all my DH found out. I'll ask him tomorrow and I'll see if I can get in touch with this girl for you.

| Try taking a look at Emirates (EK) Interview - all you need to know about it (threads merged) - PPRuNe Forums It's a pilot forum (mainly British) and there's loads of discussion about Emirates on there, not just that thread. We're looked at it, too, for later - pluses are nice housing, allowance for schools, taxi pickup for your husband for work - minuses are that Dubai's a building site with mostly private beaches, some people aren't keen on the lifestyle, and I've heard Emirates have started to 'fiddle' duty hours so that hours not actually flying on long haul don't count (i.e, rest is not included, even in-flight) - so duty hours are much longer. That's just a rumour, however. Still, a good option, for some.. |

| Tory, thanks for the referral. Lots of interesting stuff on there, to say the least. It seems that the people who have worked for them are very poarlized in their opinions of the experience. The biggest issue for us is that Rachel and I can't go with him. 1) I'm starting school in the fall, and this is a major priority for us as a family; and 2) my ex-husband would fight us tooth and nail, possibly all the way to court, if I tried to take her there. So we still have to consider whether it would represent enough of a boost in his career to be a long distance family for at least three years. I know military families do it, but they don't have much choice. Question is, can we? |

| So tricky! I don't think I could cope with my husband in a different place. If he went, i'd go with him - although I appreciate that isn't an option for you. The international schools out there, though, are excellent.... although not much help, I know... As for career furthering - it would be a dream job for my husband, but then again I think he'd be looking at staying with them, and possibly trying to get a route out of the UK, eventually. I'm not sure about getting jobs back in the US, I'm afraid. |

| My DH was set to interview with them in January. He's postponed it and they told him to re-apply if he's interested in the future. We have several friends who are there or are heading there and this is what I know: -Approx. $4500 tax-free US -Paid Health, Dental, Eye Care for pilot and family - except if the family doesn't live in Dubai for a specific amount of time (like 300 days/yr) then only for the pilot -If your family WITH children move to Dubai - then it's a paid 4 BDRM villa (most likely in Silicon Oasis) with other pilot families It is gated - except - there are areas where trucks/people/cars could drive between the houses and enter! -They will fully furnish your villa OR will give you money to furnish it yourself - to furnish would be flooring, appliances, furniture etc. If just pilot and wife with NO children, then they will give you an apartment wherever they want to put you. -Pilot is picked up/dropped off by limo for all trips -They have rotating seniority - 3 month of best trips, 3 month of second best and final 3 are worst. There are a couple of American schools and Emirates will pay an amount of the tuition. I remember one was GEMS There is an American Hospital. Dubai seems to be very tolerant of foreigners. Something like 80% are western. The only time you would need to cover your head is IF you choose to visit certain areas or mosques. Some woman have said they feel safer there then they do in America. (That's there opinion) I hope this helps. Good luck - it was a hard decision for us. Jen |

| Member | I grew up part of my teenage years in Abu Dhabi, a neighboring city to Dubai (don't ask, long story, my parents were hippie entrepreneurs) and I can tell you this; I LOVED living there! You live like royalty being a Westerner, they have amazing restaurants/clubs/pubs, the people are friendly, the city looks like a mixture between Miami and New York (with turquoise warm water and sandy beaches, gorgeous high rise skyline) and it's just a very international and fun environment. I would recommend living there a few years to ANY family - we sure would welcome the opportunity once my hubby has amassed enough hours to qualify. Good luck!! GO FOR IT, you won't regret it but I agree with a previous post; you should be an adventurous spirit as it's still a very international community filled with people and mentalities very different from everything you know in the US. I loved it! ![]() PS) Just read that you won't be able to join him, sorry I missed that part at first ... blech, that's tough ... it's a LONG long flight and I can't even imagine that commute. How long does he get off when he's off? If anything less than a full week, then I don't know that it's worth it. Are you 100% sure about your husband being able to fight that if you can prove that your daughter's quality of life would greatly improve? If you have full custody he might only get away with having custody of her for part of the summer or year ... Not sure where you are going to school but they have AMAZING universities and schools in Dubai (many of which are accredited in the US). |
