It is pretty standard on any application to ask if you have ever failed a checkride. The FAA now requires that airlines have access to pilot records from previous airlines. I can't remember if there is a time period limit on them or not. This is because of a crash a couple of years ago where they found one of the pilots (I think it was the CA but not positive) had a history of problems with training at a couple of different airlines. He was allowed to "slip through the cracks" and people ended up dead because of it. I wish I could remember the airline and what happened with it, but I'm thinking somehow American Eagle was involved.

I know Bill's first partner at XJT washed out (poor guy paid $10,000 for his training too). I think they allowed him to resign on his own, before he had a checkride. That way I guess you can say you didn't fail a checkride, but left due to personal reasons. Last I heard, (long time ago) he got some more experience and got on with BizEX which later was bought by AA Eagle.

Wow, Kristie, that's an intense story. My SO has talked about "washing out" (actually that term is new to me). Fortunately, he is not worried about that currently. He aced his first big test and the systems check- which sounds super scary- is in a week. He busts a** when it comes to studying. I am very impressed; I need to make sure that I tell him that.

I have absolutely no problem, whatsoever, being supportive/backing off/being there/not being there, etc. as training progresses. It sounds difficult. I think that we are doing well so far- I posted this initially when we had a weird glitch in our overall communication/relationship. We are past that now- thank goodness.

This is a legacy airline which I know is a big deal and he is also awaiting word from another airline which might make him abandon this training. Who knows? It's all very difficult. He also feels like his instructors haven't been that great and kind of got "schooled" yesterday in the sim. even though he had felt good before. Oh boy- it's a lot to think about.

Thanks for all of the information. I am giving him lots of space when he needs/wants it.

Anyhow... it's a different lifestyle, that's for certain. I'm an independent gal; I'm intersted in it as the best of both worlds, really. I just don't always want to feel single and alone. Due to circumstances, that's how I've felt at times, but there's a lot of potential on the horizon.

Whew- talk about a long post...

The thing to always (!) remember is that it's temporary....sometimes it's not going to feel great...other days you'll feel better about it but the fact that it's purely a temporary situation is what gets most girls thru it!

its a great post...I needed to be reminded of all the struggles pilots go through during training...I can't imagine how I would be studying till midnight, eating pop tarts, sleeping in the same room with a complete stranger, worried about what my Wife/husabnd is going through at home without me. Its so draining yet or serious for their dreams to take place.

These are all very good posts! My sweetie showed his support for me when I was going through training at Chautauqua by helping me study (on the rare occasion that I did make it home on the weekends). Every airline has callouts and memory items. BF would read the captain's lines on the callouts, and quiz me on memory items and the flash cards I'd made.

I don't know if your sweetie would rather work on those things by himself or not. Chances are, he and his classmates quiz each other all the time. Also, he'll probably have a cockpit poster. We prepared for our oral exam by explaining what every button in the cockpit does. If he can explain some of the buttons to you, and break it down in a way that someone without aviation experience can understand it, it'll show that he has a thorough understanding of the systems. It's a great way to stay involved with his training and show him that he won't miss out on any studying if he comes home on the weekends!
