How about some happy commuting stories?? I gotta hang on to the hope commuting will work, if just for a little while!

DH has commuted since he started at ExpressJet in 1999. He has commuted from Orlando-Housto (while I was finishing my last semster in college), and then from NH to Houston/Cleveland/Newark. He hates the commute to Newark from NH (alot of pilots do it) and he has good luck overall. He has had to drive to EWR a few times in the past 3 months due to early shows but what can you do.

The commute from NH to Houston was not fun....but he did it. He doesn't want to move away from NH since all our family is here, and if he is going to be gone a lot, he wants me near family (especially with baby on the way).

So overall commuting sucks, but it is do-able. The only thing I am afraid of is DH having a heart attack before 40 because the loads are so tight from NH to EWR (and back!)!

DH's rule has always been to bid where he would have a one leg commute. With the exception of a ten month period, he has always commuted. He always has back up plans and is ok with it.

The Denver-Chicago commute is known for being a really hard commute. There are a lot of United people that live here and work in Chicago (our neighbor being one of them). He hasn't commuted for very long, but so far it has been uneventful...until he tried to get home last night. There were a lot of storms in the area and cancelled flights. People got rebooked via Denver. So it really messed up DH. But he did get home last night!

It's not too bad if the airport he commutes out of has more than one airline that goes non-stop to his base.

That's doug's too...we'd rather live where we like and have him commute vs living where we don't want to live and be miserable. As long as it's just one jump there and back, no big deal.

but so far, since he's been at DAL, he's always been able to make the flight he's tried for whether sitting in back or JSing.. he just plans it out by looking at loads ahead of time or getting the jumpseat 3 days ahead and it works perfectly fine!

DH uses 3 airlines to get to work. So he checks the loads on each beginning with a couple of days in advance and works out his plans.

I wish DH had different airlines to choose from to get to work...the only airline that goes from Manchester-EWR is Continental (likely for him ExpressJet does all the flights so it makes it easier to jump seat....and there are only a few Express pilots senior to him that do that commute so he is really lucky).

But he can always use LGA as a back up and take NJ transit. DH has had to do that many times from DTW!
