Default Checkairmen and/or other "non-flying" duties

Jen, I know your hubby's a checkairmen..but what exactly does he do for that job? is it just IOE type flying or is he in the office/sim? does he still fly often doing landings/takeoffs even as checkairmen? Does he get paid much more being a checkairman? anyone else have info on that?

Also, has anyone's hubby ever done the "hotel verification" type job where said pilot goes and stays in hotels domestic/international to verify whether they'd be good crew hotels?

hubby was asked not to long ago to do one of these jobs (he was asked for both but can only do one at a time) and he thinks doing the hotel checking/verification would be more fun for the both of us than him just being a checkairman...but i don't know much about the whole hotel type job and was just wondering if anyone else's hubby had done that and what it all included and how the pay was compared to checkairman?

he's also been asked to be a "union" man.. we both know he doesn't want to go that route yet but i (myself) don't know what even that would involve.. him being more of a doormat and/or office guy or what...last thing i want is for him to be taken off the line already - he's really enjoying it.

I know i've already asked a lot in just one thread and if needed, i can split it out into 2 or 3...

yes, i know i could ask this over at JC but i think it'd be good information for all of US girls to know.. the guys already know it.. HAHA

Any info, let me know!

Default Re: Checkairmen and/or other "non-flying" duties

My DH is a sim checkairman. He teaches new hires and performs checkrides for new hires and recurrents. He's guaranteed 92 hrs. per month plus a checkairman override (pay would be equal to 107 hours for the month). 12 days off a month mimimum and most major holidays off (Xmas Eve closed by 5pm, Xmas off, Thanksgiving off and NYE closed by 5pm). If he wants he can pick up open time(days off only) for 1.5X his hourly. Some months he has 1 or 2 fly days (to keep him current) and he can pick up anything from any pilot in the system. Those days are included in his 92 hour guarantee.

He's been asked to become a line checkairman but he passed, he likes this schedule and pay for now.

Initially he took this job to be around more for our kids and it looks good on his resume. He's trying HARD to move on to the majors. 9/11 set him back a couple of years.

Let me know if you have any additional questions.

His exact duties are:
New Hires: Once they're done with ground school they come to DH and he teaches them every aspect of the aircraft. Examples: powering a/c up at gate, taxi, take-off, climb, cruise, decents, approaches, after-landing, parking and depowering the a/c. Pretty much if you do it in the a/c - he teaches it.

On top of that he teaches emergency procedures: single engine approaches, v1 cuts, no flap approaches, stalls, steep turns etc.

And he also prepares them for their oral exams.

Recurrents:
Recurrent manuevers and line orientated evaluations.

Some pass and some don't. Thats pretty much it.

No worries!

DH has an amazing amount of patience! He always makes sure that the new hires have our phone number if they have any questions and that they should never be afraid to call. He's even worked with some guys on off days because they were having problems.

Actually a new hire from a month ago called last night with an IOE question!

Good luck to yours - I'm sure he will do great!!!!

Yep, sounds like home. DH has an amazing amount of patience as well. (I'll chalk that up to being a Dad to four little monkeys ). I suppose that is why he is currently on the teaching side of things.

Yep, the new hires also call him with questions as well. Last night he had a student from 2 classes ago call him to discuss a few things and students often arrange times for some one on one training. When DH was teaching the INDOC classes we would have the whole class over for huge Mexican Food Feasts. It was so much fun to have these new hires in our home. (My kids are already networking! -j/k)

Best of luck to your DH, he will do great.
