Default Re: Crashpads

Okay- it has been a while....but DH has had a few crashpads (Houston/Cleveland/Newark). It varied.....he lived with one of our friends from college in Houston/Cleveland for a while. Other times he "rented" a bed. He would find a place where they paid by the month for a bed.
  1. Obviously, it varies, but generally, are these houses, dorms, apartments, what? DH was in apartments and houses.
  2. Not to be personal, but how much do they cost? depending on the base and proximity to airport.....I think he paid anywhere from 140-190 a month.
  3. I keep reading that people are not there much, and don't really know the other people there. So, why have a crashpad, why not just get a motel. Cheaper! If DH had to pay for a motel/hotel when he was sitting on reserve at base....it would have been a lot of money. Cleveland was nice, he could get a hotel for 45$ a night with transportation to the airport....but if he had to do that 16 days a month (if he never got used during reserve, or was given all day trips) that would be over 700$ a month vs a crashpad for under 200.....
  4. What should we look for in a crashpad? Who runs it, does it have transportation to airport (i.e. bus stops, train stops...), type of neighborhood, male/female, what is included (tv/computer), is it near food (supermarket, etc...and is it in walking distance!), will he have his own bed or is it first come first serve each day?
  5. Can DH keep personal things like clothes, etc there? DH kept a bag there with his pillow, sheets, etc but honestly he travels with everything else.
  6. So, how long are these contracts? I know he will have to do reserves before he gets a line, so signing a one year lease really does not seem reasonable, so how does that work? I think DH just did it by the month...but gave them a month or two notice when he got a line and wouldn't need it
  7. Do you need to give a down payment? I know DH put a security deposit down....and got it back when he sent back his key

My DH didn't find much for crashpads in Palm Springs so I looked on Craigslist.com at roomates wanted/shared housing/apartments, etc. We wound up with a great, although unique situation with a homosexual man who just wants to rent his extra room out a few nights a month. DH pays $20 a night and has first priority. It was pretty comical at first as DH can be kind of homophobic but the guy is in his late 60's and very nice. It has turned out really well. My brother in law did the same thing while working out of town as a union plumber. He wound up staying in a family's house. Each situation is different but you never know what's out there until you look.

Congrats to Jeff!!

Did Jeff get DTW as his base? If so, depending on his call out time, he may be able to just stay home. Eric says Pinnacle (he thinks) has short, medium, and long call outs.

Good luck! I hope he's not on reserve for very long!

He got a call at 10 last night that they are flying him to Denver this morning. It still amazes me how unorganized the whole thing seems. Jeff is happy to jump through any hoop they want though, and if he is gone, he's gone, doesn't matter if he is in Memphis or Denver!

You are well on your way of understading how completely crazy and at times chaotic this industry really is. The phone will be ringing a lot. It will be soon when he learns when and who he answers the phone for. (Caller ID has got to be the best invention EVER!)

I'm sure it seems unorganized but I am assuming that they probably just had open time that they had to fill.

Good Luck to you both and Congratulations to Jeff.

Ah, what is that? I feel so silly that I do not know this stuff, but Jeff is really focused, because this is do or die for him, so he tells me what is NEXT, but not what is after that. So, I know he is in Denver for the next 9 days doing SIM, and that his check ride is May 19. Fill in the blanks for me please!!!

Flight Safety is a training facility in STL (simulators). For some reason I had it in my head that he was going to be doing some of his training there. A lot of airlines use them.
