It definitely depends on the owner. John's landlady has said on occasion that I could come and stay, but I would have to stay on the couch, and it would also depend on how many of her crashers were in the house on any given day. Although she and John have become pretty good friends over the almost three years he's been staying there, so I don't know if she'd do it for everyone who stays there, KWIM?

another question i thought about....

do you have to buy your own voltage converters or does the company supply them??

Any idea what converters are needed for Africa and India?

Bill carried his own 'converter kit' when he was intl with TWA. We didn't talk when he was on his intl trips, he'd call before he'd leave JFK, and then again when he got back stateside. He did 3 day trips. No big deal really, 36 hours at most without talking to him, I can do that .

it's not that i can't do that, i just want the option of being able to get ahold of him if there's an emergency or anything (like we've had in the past).

The hotel phone numbers are posted on the rotation. If you really needed to, you could just suck up the international long distance and call the hotel. Also, scheduling does have their 'emergency' number, that you can call anytime, and they'll contact the crew member either via hotel or ACARS.

I have the number for crewing (UK version of scheduling) who will get hold of my hubbie if they need to. Other than that, I just text him, and he checks his phone for messages (which is free) when he's away, so he could just call me back if it was important.

Hey- it would be cool if the airlines supplied converters but I would be surprised if they did! Nick bought a really nice converter set from Brookstone. I know you can find them cheaper. Check the internet for converter types for Africa/India. They can't be too much harder to get than European ones, right?

Also- I would definitely buy the converter(s) on eBay- so much chheaper on there! They will also tell you in the description if it can be used in Africa or India.

I've seen converter kits which have attachments for outlets worldwide - I borrowed my coworker's kit when I went to Europe last year. I'm probably going to purchase one myself shortly.

Kristie, as far as the SIM cards go, I think the way that it works is that while you're in the states, you use your normal SIM card, but when you go overseas, you switch it for another SIM card that has a local number to wherever you are. The only problem is that you would need one for each area, and there is some special unlocking code that you need for your phone to use the new SIM card. Brian only has trips to Canada and Mexico so far - we just don't talk when he's there. He sends me a text when he gets in. We're looking into international calling cards.

I stayed in B's crashpad once - he just mentioned something to his pad mates ahead of time. We had the place to ourselves, though, so it wasn't really a problem.

Hope this helps!
