| I donīt know if this is the right place to put it this in, but Iīll try it anyway. Me and my BF are thinking about TR for B737, you know, self funded type rating, so he can increase his chance to advance and land the first job in some airline company. I donīt know the situation in USA, but in Europe there is a more and more airlines with funny schemes where they basically ask the pilots to fund/ participate or in other way sponsor the type rating training. I know this is the hard way, the money for the moment is not the issue, this makes us postpone other plans, but they are postpone anyway because his situation at current work is not good anyway( or desirable). We still have some doubts, my BF is basically afraid of investing lots of money in training and with no job guarantee, but on the other hand he is desperate to fly.. and than if he accept to pay for TR he contributes to the current situation...well.. Do you folks have opinion on this? Thanks a lot.. |

| Jetgirls Ol' School Member | I'm not certain, but I remember hearing that Southwest is more likely to hire pilots who already have type ratings in the 737... I've heard of some XJT pilots paying for their type ratings. It certainly doesn't hurt their marketability! |

| Admin/Owner ![]() | I think southwest is the only company that prefers pilots have their type rating before interviewing with the company. If i'm right, most european airlines prefer their pilots go thru the same type of method of obtaining their training and certificates before being hired. I think i've heard Ryan Air wanting their pilots to pay for the TR before interviewing but that's the only one i've heard of..but their training track is kinda bizarre too from what i recall reading. Just not sure if that's the norm or not. My question would be whether there are any european airlines that will hire you first on the notion that you will then go out and get your TR? It'd be a pain to get the TR and yet not have a job to go too once you've paid for it. Are there any airlines over there that offer the TR in training or that don't need a TR at all?

| My DH has thought about it too It's scary because that's alot of money for no guaranteed job, but w/o capt. time no one seems to be interested in him. Even with internal recommendations! We're getting very frustrated and starting to lose hope. He's back at his old job now and in recurrent training. He's going to talk to his sim instructor to see how much he'd charge to tack on a type rating (which would need additional time in the sim) to his SIC rating. All I want to know is "Who do you have to sleep with in this industry to get your foot in the door?" I already gave DH the go-ahead to sleep with whomever he thinks will get him the job! ![]() |

| Jetgirls Plus Member ![]() | Nick thought about getting his 737 TR last year to try to get into Southwest. He had 2 friends who paid for it - about $7-8000 US. Neither got hired at SOuthwest and feel it looks like a black mark when they apply elsewhere since it was obvious they didn't get hired at SWA. I'm glad Nick didn't do it since we don't have that type of money. Things worked out since he got hired at CAL and they pay for his 757/767 TR thanks goodness. I wish I knew more about the International airlines to help you better. \By the way Nick has a 27 hour layover in Madrid 3/29... not sure where he's staying yet! Amanda |

| ups...I just have to say it! I love the time difference! Itīs 9.44 a.m for me and I just get some quiet moment in office, and there is so many answers!!! yupiii Iīll go answering one by one: basically the situation in Europe is as follows: lots of airline prefered experienced and type rated pilots and there is shortage of those, problem appears when you are low houred, no jet time and under 1500 hours total time. ( as in our case..have about 1000 hours TT and the trend for the moment is 100-150 hours a YEAR!)...so I firstly was supporting him to hold out and wait, if something is going to change in his company...but it didnīt...and if he is going to get only 150 hours a year, itīwill take us 4 or 5 more years just to could apply to Ryanair or easy jet...and these make you pay your TR anyway...( they call it bond and salary is lower for first 5 years..muuuch lower).. We found swedish company that do the type rating in cooperation with Pan Am Flight Academy..and itīs going to end up somewhere in 30 000 euros...( big part of the course is carried out in pan am flight academy in Miami..than base check + 100 hours in Europe...because of the JAA license and no restriction on his licence)...Any advices there? So would they hire him after this?...I do some investigation on the market...who hires and whom...than what companies had placed orders to boeing and airbus in following years...well... If he wanna fly in Europe, expectations will be ryanair, easyjet..with loooooots of luck air nostrum ( regional spanish company- Iberia owned)...others spanish companies like Iberia, Spanair, Air Europa are basically out of question, asian company are hiring... untill he dontīhave 3000 or more hours on type or "Padrino" Well weīll have to investigate more..there are coming couple of his friends this week ( from fATPL course) and theyīve got he A 320 TR..so weīll get som "fresh" info on that... Amanda...if Nick will have a time on his layover, I think my BF( and me) would be more than happy to meet him .-) and practice english...and speak airplanes ..jejej We can always get him from the hotel and give him a round tour on Madrid..! well..thatīs all for now...out and over .... |
