This is what I have learned. The first move away from home is actually the most difficult. If this is the area you grew up in, like CA was for me, you know everything about your town. Where to shop, which back roads to take in a traffic jam, family, friends, etc. I'm sure it feels exciting and a little scary at the same time. Change is hard, but rely on your SO, you two sound like a great team.

Also, it takes a good year to actually feel settled in your new home.
I realize that this amount of time seems like such a long time, but really a good year is about average. Remember you'll be dealing with new jobs, new streets, new grocery stores - sometimes even new foods, new friends, and all the other new things: banks, dentists, doctors, hair stylist. etc. This is funny, but even new news reporters. Hey it might seem silly, but when you have seen the same news reporters for several years it just seems wierd to be hearing the news from someone else. I'm not reminding you of these things to scare you; please don't read this as that- just a reminder that all of these things take time, but it is on your time table.

One more thing: it is also very interesting to start somewhere "new" where nobody knows who you are. When I left CA for AZ I knew nobody in our new state which was actually really fun. Nobody in AZ knew that I ate paste in the first grade, unlike my friends back home. =) This is your journey- make it fun and enjoy!
I couldn't agree more with what Christy has written...last year I moved from New Mexico to North Carolina...my whole family, which really consists of my brother and sister, I moved away from...it really was the HARDEST decision that I have had to make in my 24 yrs of existence...I moved really blinded, because I had no idea what I was doing...

But in part, I also had the BF which has made the transition go well, not great at times, but livable...out here, I had NO idea what I was doing...and at times felt REALLY REALLY lost...stores, the people, geography was just so new, that if I didn't have my BF there, I'd have a nervous breakdown so long ago!

One year, later, I am so glad that I moved cross country...yes, I left everything that was familiar to me...but I really think it has given me a sense of independance...I am now accustomed to dodging traffic, all the good eats, cool unknown facts about the CLT area, and can really get around without having the street city map glued to my steering wheel......

I just live for the day, and I"m the type of person that I don't want to be an 80 yr old women, and thinking, "oh, I wish I would have done that... ..."

Congratulations on the new job. My mother-in-law lives in Indy and i always enjoy visiting the city. She did live in Fishers, and now lives in a condo near Carmel, both of which are great areas.
Good luck with the move.

Cassie, that's kind of what I'm thinking.. it's a chance to do something different. And my boyfriend will be there.. so that will make it easier.

StlKT,
Carmel is one of the main areas we are looking at.. And also, Your dog is SO CUTE.. I love King Charles Spaniels.. I think that's because they remind me of my Brit..

To Ms. Kelly....ah! so you still do lurk on here. Good!

I am sad to be leaving you too, but that's what is so great about working for airlines and being on the pass travel of somebody who works for airlines... travel benefits! We will have an extra bedroom because we are hoping to lure people to visit us. I hope you guys decide to come down.

Of course we will come down. Especially since Mike will have weekends off. It will work out perfectly. Until Tony gets a new job, then I might be coming to visit you a lot. And it's nice to, that even though IND is 4 hours away, we could still drive when the flights are full. I'm sure we will still see you all the time.
