Well, Doug's done with training except for 2 days of Transoceanic Navigation classes...he finished his sim type rating this morning and they had him flying over the equator to equador and south america. that's a really tough leg to fly apparently cuz doug said the ATC guys don't really understand you, nor can you understand them that well (he said they kept saying "roger" all the time), you have majorly high mountains, jetstream turbulence because your hitting opposing jetstreams (thunderstorms from that - rainforest type stuff) and radar isn't all it's cracked up to be down there.

apparently, the airport in equador, or was it bogata?, is inside a volcano, so it's pretty tricky taking off and landing.

after hearing all that, i'm not even sure i want to fly down there.. haha

but he passed with flying colors and can now call himself an "international" pilot. YAY!!

now he has to do one domestic IOE and 4 transoceanic IOE portions which will probably keep him in training until June. but at least he'll be flying and not sitting in ATL studying for hard core FAA exams and sim instructors trying to kill him!

here he is in front of his new gig

That's great news!

As for the "international pilot" thing - so funny to hear that, as of course, it's hard not to be if you fly from the UK We're so tiny ...!

Hubbie does battle with a lot of difficult ATCs on a daily basis. He says Turkey and Egypt are particularly bad - they have a fair amount of trouble understanding each other. It's a skill all the pilots gradually acquire... practice makes perfect!

Awesome news! Must be a relief for both of you.

A.net moment - what's the gold around the widget on the fuselage for?

It is a relief.. it was a long 2 months and it'll be nice to get my husband back for a while. hahaha

good question on the widget! I really don't have any idea...I'll ask about it though. might not get an answer simply because the whole widget just changed when DAL came out of BK on Monday.

I think I answered my own question (being the geek, er "aviation enthusiast" I am) after taking another look at the pic..."Spirit of Delta" is painted on the fuselage too so the widget must go along with that.

I don't like the new livery much...but at least it doesn't remind me of BA's logo like the wavy logo does.
/end a.net moment!

Congratulations! What wonderful news and LOVE the picture!

I can't even imagine ATC for international routes! I honestly never thought twice about that before you had mentioned it as DH has only flown stateside and into Cananda. Heck DH would make comments re: ATC in Boston and New York- again I can't even begin to imagine international.

Congrats!

I love the 757, not for a good reason or anything, just because they have the little tvs on the backs of the seats. Before dh quit Comair I tried to find a flight to LAX just for fun haha. I just like flying!!
