H1n1

My son has H1N1. His doctor did not even want to see him, but his symptoms fit and it is going around here like crazy. His school has 50 kids out sick today, there are only about 275 kids in his school. They said there was no need to be tested or even be seen unless he is in respiratory distress.

My husband is supposed to go to work tomorrow. He isn't sure what to do knowing he has been exposed to it, he could spread it around at work. He doesn't have any symptoms at this time. What do you think is the right thing to do?

If it were my DH, i'd try to keep him away from the child as much as possible and see how he's feeling tomorrow. I'd also have him load up on Vitamin C pills. My aunt who's a nurse, swears by it. She takes 1000mg in the am and 1000mg at night.... every day. Then i'd see how he feels tomorrow. If he still feels fine, i'd tell him to go to work but use plenty of Purell (if he can't get to a bathroom to wash his hand often) and at the first sign of not feeling well, to let his CP know.

I can't remember... how old is your son? How has it been? I'm still debating whether or not to get the girls vaccinated for H1N1. Some people I know that had it said it was mild, but i'm curious what your experience with it is.

Your husband could be contagious without having symptoms (yet). He should practice good coughing/sneezing, to keep his (possible) germs to himself. (Your son should, too, but it can be hard for kids.)

If your son has any respiratory problems, bring him in to the doctor right away. Most people get over H1N1 quickly and problem free in a matter of days... The people who have complications get them from respiratory problems.

In addition to over loading on Vitamin C, I'd throw in some zinc, and push the clear liquids. I'm sure that your son will be back to normal in no time!

He has been with him constantly the last couple of days and today. I will tell him about the vitamin C. He doesn't feel that great now, but thinks it may be from not sleeping well last night.

Billy is 11. It seemed to first start with a runny nose and cough. Now he has a sore throat, runny nose, sneezing, cough, achey, and has a mild fever and chills. He was wheezing too since he has asthma that occurs when he has a cold. It seems pretty typical flulike symptoms. Hopefully, it will only last a couple more days.

He did get the flu shot for the regular flu. They don't have the H1N1 available yet. Does anyone know if you get it, can you get it again?

You shouldn't be able to the the same flu more than once, that's why they can make a vaccine for it. Once your body develops anti-bodies for that particular strain, you should be good to go. The flu virus mutates, though, and that's why they have to make new vaccines for different strains every year.

Tanya,,, with my FIL being a Pediatrician,, he highy recommended getting Liam vaccianted for H1N1, but is it supposed to make Liam sick? Is it a live virus???? He has his 12 month wellness check on Wed... I am now wondering what to do,,, should he be getting the regular flu shot and the H1N1 too????? Oh gosh,,, nervous nelly here...

Influenza A (H1N1) Monovalent Nasal-Spray Flu Vaccine (Live Attenuated Influenza Vaccine [LAIV]

What is the nasal spray flu vaccine? There are two types of flu vaccine: the flu shot and the nasal spray vaccine. Both types of vaccine are being made against 2009 H1N1. The nasal spray flu vaccine (sometimes called LAIV for Live Attenuated Influenza Vaccine) is a vaccine made with live, weakened viruses that cannot grow at normal body temperature and is given via a nasal sprayer. This vaccine was approved for seasonal influenza viruses in 2003 and tens of millions of doses of the vaccine have been given in the United States.

Something else to consider:
It turns out, the new H1N1 vaccine (the one that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and even President Obama have been pushing so strongly) contains an ingredient that may have some parents worrying. Thimerosal is a mercury-based preservative that has been phased out of childhood immunizations since 2001 due to concerns that the preservative MAY be linked to autism. But thimerosal (which is about half-mercury) will be found in most vials of the H1N1 vaccine. However, it may be possible to find doses that are thimerosal-free if you ask for single-dose shots. According to the CDC, "Single-dose syringes will be thimerosal-free, which will address concerns about this additive, especially regarding pediatric and pregnant vaccine recipients (inhaler sprayer vaccine products also will be thimerosal-free)."
Does the H1N1 vaccine contain mercury?

If I were to get the vaccine for myself or my child, I would make sure to get one that is thimerosal free. Also, a lot of people seem to get sick after getting flu shots, so, I'd just be prepared for that as well.

The H1N1 immunization is no different that the regular flu immunization. It's just different strands of flu that appeard later, so they had to make a seperate shot for it. I am going to get it as soon as I can, because of my risk with the babies I take care of and also wanting to start trying for a baby sometime soon. The problem is...I'm not so sure where to get it, because my primary care doctor said they aren't getting a shipment from the CDC. I suppose I'll call my obgyn and see if they'll have it.

My cousin had H1N1, and she felt like crap for a few days, with a bad cough, but got over it quicker than the normal flu. She is 17 and lives at home with her parents...neither one of them got it.
