Default High blood glucose

Hello Dana,

I'm having a bit of a panic. For the last week I've been feeling absolutely exhausted, and a lot of pretty normal things have been feeling difficult to do. So, I called my GP and he suggested I have some blood tests done, so I went in first thing this morning. I was told I'd get the results on Friday.

However, about an hour ago (at about 5pm) the doctor called me back to tell me that the Lab had called him to flag up unusually high blood glucose levels, which he says may mean I'm diabetic.

I'm shocked. I'm 29, caucasian, I have a relatively healthy diet (I don't like sweet foods much) and I don't smoke. I do drink alcohol, but not excessively. I'm a UK size 14 (which I think is a US 10?) However, my dad has Type 2 diabetes, and I was diagnosed with PCOS eight years ago. I've been on Metformin ever since.

I'm really worried, as of course i know that Diabetes can cause a lot of other problems, and we're thinking of starting a family, and I'm petrified this is going to cause more problems. Will it? Do you think I could have "pre-diabetes", or whatever it's called, and that I can prevent the full blown problem by exercise and a good diet?

Is it common to find it in women of my age?

I'm going to the hospital tomorrow for more tests, I think. I'm crossing my fingers.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.
