How long has she been having this problem? Its a fairly common side effect of starting solids early on, sometimes the best thing to do long term is to go back to just milk feeds (if you didn't have this problem then) for another couple of months then slowly try introducing solids again.

This morning I took Victoria to the ped. SHe has a dual ear infection to top off all her issues. Bless her little heart.
Her bottom is so red from all the pushing. They gave her another supppository after they realized she was so bound up. The nurse tried taking her temp rectally and couldn't. OUCH!
Victoria tried to poop and nothing happened. He suppository that was inserted at 1130 AM at the docs hadn't even realy melted all the way. I tried putting another one in and couldn't. Prunes has not helped at all. I am not breastfeeding either, in fact she is on a lactose free formula because her tummy gets so upset with the reg formula.
Tomorrow morning I need to call the pediatrician and have her do something else, possibly an enema. ughh. Tori is not a happy camper today. She would just look at her daddy and want some sort of relief with huge crocodile tears.

hmm, I thought of that too, but have only really done fruits, so I didn't think anything would really cause the constipation.

Brenda,

This is a home remedy and you can take it with a grain of salt if you want.

I used to boil some chammomile(sp), I would by the on in the bag that had the yellow flower, let it set until it was luke warm, put it in the bottle with a DROP of karo clear syrup.

I would give it to my kids between feedings, and they were getting their liquids, and I think the warmness of the tea would soothe the tummy and also help with the constipation. It works real well for colic too.

Just another suggestion

Karyo syrup 1 tsp to 3-4 oz of water works pretty well... NO HONEY though, they could be allergic to bees and that would be bad.

I dont know if I would try the Karyo syrup thing at this point. She sounds pretty bound up.
Ask your peds doc about Mirlax. I have used it several times on babys and it works GREAT. She may need an abdominal xray.... Once she is over this, I would be extra sure she is getting lots of water. It is strange that a breast fed baby is constipated, usually they are loose but anything happens.
Please keep us all posted on her outcome!

Miralax is great. It use to be by prescription only, but is now over the counter. My son has to make sure that he isn't constipated because of his renal\bladder issues, and his docs have prescribed it for him for years now. Do a quick search online for a coupon; it is very expensive. Cvs has it on sale right now, and with a coupon, it makes it more reasonable.

My mom used to tell me about the karo syrup all the time, but I have never tried it myself.

I didn't know that is why the docs said to stay away from honey for the first year or so. That is good to know. Always learning something new here. I thought it had something to do with botulism or something like that. I guess I am just clueless sometimes! : )

Oh, here is link for 2.00 off coupon from their site: MiraLAX® Restores Your Body's Natural Rhythm™

we bought miralax, but I went with my own decision and went with a mild laxative for infants, looked really gross but had faster results! She's pooping! She's still having issues and will use the miralax tonight. Now we're just waitign for the major explosion! lol
Thank you all for your advice. It's so awful not knowing what to do for your baby, you know?

Karo syrup makes me nervous...I took care of a 4 month old in the ICU that had botulism from using karo syrup for constipation. Scary. (I'm going to be such a paranoid mom from the unusual stuff these kids get!)

I did not use the miralax as suggested by the nurse at the ped office. I read on the label that it would still take at least 3 days for it to kick in. We needed fast results. So, I saw Little Tummys laxative drops, will work in as littl eas 3 hrs! PERFECT!
The stuff is real nasty looking, thought that maybe Victoria wouldn't swallow the stuff, but she did. 6 hs later, major explosion and a happy little girl!
