| Awhile back, in a another thread, everyone was discussing their panic attacks. After reading what some of you had to say, it sounded like what I've been experiencing for the past 4 yrs. I always wondered if that's what I was feeling, but never went to the doctor or talked about it with anyone other than my DH. Now, I've been having what I call heart flutters. Out of nowhere, my heart suddenly starts beating about 10X the normal speed and I feel like I need to take a deep breath to slow my heart down. Just as quickly as it come on, it goes away. They're happening alot recently and it's really starting to scare me. Is anyone else familiar with this? Jen |

It was how my second panic-attack phase presented itself. The first time, I had a conscious (and ridiculous) fear that something specific would happen. Years later, when the panic attacks happened again, they would manifest as a rising flutter in my chest. When I tried to sleep, every time I got close to falling, the flutter would happen and I'd wake up. It happened all night long - I didn't get a second of sleep. It was scary, because since it hadn't happened before, I was afraid I might actually have a heart problem. The next day, I went to the emergency room, and the doctor put me in a room to wait. While I waited, the flutters stopped (which made me KNOW it was a panic attack, because my diverted attention stopped the effects - were it an actual heart problem, it wouldn't just stop like that when I was feeling better psychologically). He'd even asked if I had ever had panic attacks, or if the flutters had stopped since deciding to come see him (both answers: yes). It's scary shit, though. Don't want the heart being fluttery!

| The flutters are called "heart palpitations" when referring to panic/anxiety attacks. I have so many books and got a degree from the university of "Google" on Panic/anxiety attacks. (joke) ![]() But seriously,, I know a LOT and have done so much reading on this. There are so many good things out there on how to treat and handle panic and anxiety,,,,,, But for sure,,, it is sooooo scary,, I went to the ER twice in my life for it,, because when it happens you are so convinced that you are either having heart problems cause you heart is beating out of your chest or that you are about to pass out!!! |

Likely, this is anxiety but you should see your provider. There are several other things that should be looked at before you just label it anxiety. When the thyroid is out of whack, it can cause your heart to beat really fast and have heart palpations (fluttering/pounding in your chest). There are other heart conditions that can cause this but likely it is anxiety as it comes and goes. When you feel that coming on, try to calm yourself, go to your "happy place", slow deep breathing, listen to music, etc. If you get dizzy, lightheaded or short of breath with the episodes, you need to be checked out right away.

| I think you are probably right Jo. The other thing is that you were setting by the window. I suffer from claustrophobia(sp) and that is how it makes me feel at times. I don't do well in tight spaces that can make the anxiety even worse. I would have an attack thinking I might be left behind while DH flies off.... especially after looking at your pictures. (some places are better to be left stranded in, KWIM?) |

| You know it certainly could be a panic attack, but I also wonder about dehydration. That's when I get to feeling too hot, and my heart races and I feel a little disoriented. With a panic attack, I don't get the overwhelming heat but I do feel like something bad is going to happen. Either way, make sure you're drinking enough (water! LOL) Jackie |

I'm so bad at keeping myself hydrated. It will be 2pm and I'll realize that I've had nothing to drink for the day. I'm trying to get in a better routine that forces me to drink some water early in the morning. Jen
