Good neighborhoods near the airport Hey all you Indiana girls,
I have a friend who will be interviewing with Republic this month, and I also got PM'd about moving to Indy. They're asking what are some of the best neighborhoods for airport access. I've only lived in Indy for 4 years, and I work downtown, so thought I'd post this in the open so I could be corrected by you smarter girls!
My thoughts:
West - Avon/Plainfield/Brownsburg - I lived on the east side of Avon when I first moved to Indy. It's more suburban feeling, and actually almost small-town feeling. Although I loved the closeness to the airport, Rockville Rd and Washington St were a MESS when I tried to get downtown. Great/best option for those whose spouse can also get a job on the west side.
Downtown - I rented here for a year. Decently easy access to airport if you can get to 65/70 easily. Lots of fun things to do - mall, restaurants, bars, sports, theaters, monuments. Mainly condo living. I guess it used to be a sketchy area but is getting better and better. I feel safe walking around by myself most of the time. Good for more active couples.
South/SE - Greenwood/Southport/Beech Grove - DH and I live here now. 20-30 minutes to the airport. Again, has a more suburban feel. Has a reputation for being a little more "hick" but I haven't seen it since we've been here. It was cheaper than downtown, had more open space and trees.
I haven't lived on North or East sides, so can't comment on those. I just know they're farther away from the airport, so don't even really cross our radar. However, Fishers/Carmel on the northside is a REALLY popular place to live and has all the "new" places. Younger singles/couples have been buying in Broad Ripple, which is kind of like a college town in the middle of the city.
Anyway, those are my two cents. Hopefully others can add or correct!
