Mollie,

I am not sure of your airline, but ex-jet does have a clause about flying outside x-jet.not sure of the details exactly, but my husband and I had the same talk awhile back. He also said something about if something would happen with a student, he would be risking his main career. Obviously, it is not worth it to us to risk our income.

As far as loans, you can get a deferment for a year or so due to hardship. We did this when my husband was on 1 and 2 year pay. After that, we asked for a minimum payment amount until we could afford more. Did someone mention 9 percent on a student loan? That seems extrememly high. You should be able to find somewhere to transfer it at a fixed rate of about 3.5 (or close to that). Also, they give you additional breaks if you have it electronically debited every month, making it even a smaller percentage.

As far as side jobs, I know a lot who consult with computers, realtors, tax consultants, etc. After my boys get older, we talked about a lawn business that my husband and boys could do together when he is home and they could still do when he is on trips. I would like the landscapping aspect with the girls (they are more into flowers). Does your husband have a trade that he does well? For instance, he could do side jobs like painting, handy-man work, etc.?

I feel for you. We were there at one point, along with my oldest being in and out of the hospital, medications, etc. You will get through it, and look back and wonder how you guys did it.

Good luck on what you decide. If it is something in aviation, I would be sure your husband double checks with the company first.
