Default De-Clawing kitty

Some people are totally against it, some see it as necessary. I am curious to hear both sides because we are considering getting my cat declawed...

This was originally a reply to SeatClutcher in jrlenz's thread, who stated:

1. Note to future cat owners - declawing is a bad idea. Instead, try discipline with a water sprayer. My cats don't claw anything but the cat tree.
We discipline my cat with a spray bottle and everything else we can think of... but she is still clawing up the place.. She claws on our couch, the corners of the walls, cabinets, and we just bought expensive sheets for the bed and she is clawing those now. I've bought her something to claw with and she won't touch it. Maybe it's the wrong thing.. but unless there is something else out there somebody can suggest, unfortunately I see the only other alternative is to get her declawed.
