Default costume idea?

Okay, so I need some advice about making a costume, actually a prop for my daughter's costume. At my kid's school, we celebrate All saint's day, catholic version of halloween. This is a huge deal at the school, and everyone goes way out to make a costume. They practice public speaking skills by standing in front of the school, giving a speech.

To my point: I need to make a prop that looks like a rock that my daughter can pull apart and come out of.....the saint she is was hidden by a rock that opened up. I need some help in figuring out how to do this. You guys seem very creative, so I know someone can think of something.

For instance of how competitive this is: people start way in advance sewing and making the costumes. Last year, someone made a paper mache head that she pulled put of her cape when she gave her speech about who she was and how she beheaded someone. Pretty ucky, huh? but, very creative too. Someone else made a costume with a staff that had fake mice crawling up it and brought in their cat (patron saint of cats). Someone else made this absolutely beautiful princess of spain costume where any girl would just die to have a costume like that to play with...

! My son wants to be daniel, daniel in the lion's den. They have to give a speech about their saint, and he was telling me the other day the veggie tale version of this...ha ha. Anyway, we are making his outfit, and my younger kids are dressing up as lions to sit around him while he gives his speech. So, his is covered, now I just need the rock idea...please help!
