You know, that is a very good question. One that I will bring up with the Gardasil rep. I know that it will protect you against exposure for the future but what if you have already been exposed in the past by past sexual partners?? HPV may not show up for years after your exposure. What we tell women/girls is, even if you have had one form of HPV and either cleared it on your own or you were treated for it, the immunization will protect you against the other 3 high risk strains of HPV.
I suppose there are two schools of thought with this....(1) you are married and will never get divorced, your husband will never die and no one will be unfaithful..... or (2) you get the shot while you are in age range and not have to be as concerned about it down the line..... decision you yourself will have to make.
There are no promises, like with any vaccine, that they may later discover a problem with it. However it has been in Europe for years..... again personal decision....my daughter got it.
