Default Claritin for kids

My 4 year old son already has bluish patches under his eyes on a daily basis. I'm positive they are hereditary and also are realted to the sleep apnea he also inherited.

Our dr. here in FL said they were "allergic shiners" (without asking about our family health history) and told me to give him claritin daily to clear them up. In december he had his tonsils and adnoids out which seemed make a small difference in the darkness and made a drastic difference in his sleep apnea.

Now that spring has set in here, he seems to have a runny nose ALL the time and I'm thinking that he must be allergic to something in the Florida flora that we didn't have in California. I went ahead and started giving him claritin for kids. So far I've given it to him for 3 days straight and it doesn't seem to be making any difference in the reddish eyes and runny nose.

My question is- does claritin have to build up in your system and it takes a few days to kick in? Or should it start working immedietly and I should try something else?

Thanks!

kim
