I used to take the family photos for granted until I had them all copied for each of my siblings after my mom died. My sister-in-law cried. She said she never had any family photos. Everything they had was lost in WWII and most of her family perished in concentration camps. The few remaining members came to NY. Whatever family photos they had, her brother kept. When he divorced, his ex-wife destroyed them.

So, you're right. Treasure what you have and give a special someone a hug.
