Default Splits in skin on thumbs, OUCH!

This is probably going to be the petty-est, silliest thread here to date, but it's something that's REALLY annoying me!

I used to get small cracks on my knuckles if I wasn't careful about putting lotion on my hands during dry weather. I haven't had that this season. But, my right thumb has had massive splits in it right by the top outside corners of the nail. It is the most obnoxious thing I have ever had to deal with! They will not go away! We have an Aprilaire (whole house humidifier), and I use Cornhusker's lotion everyday. Just when it seems to be healing up and going away, a new split opens up. My dad told me to use superglue and glue a new split back together when it opens up. I've been a little leery of the whole superglue thing. What makes these go away!?
